Posted by Unknown Minggu, 26 Mei 2013 0 komentar
Galaxy S4 is the latest offering by Samsung in the Galaxy series & with more than 10 Million units sold  world wide in a time span of a month of its release , its the fastest selling smartphone ever .
Selling for a bit over ₹33,000 In India , it competes with the Sony Xperia Z , Blackberry Z10 , HTC One , & the Iphone 5 .
S4 Black Variant
Take a look at the new S4 , its understandable why it has sold so many units.
Its pretty thin , has a very good display { Super Amoled something .. } which is viewable in sunlight .
S4 is sold globally in two variants , one powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 processor & the other powered by Samsung's own Octa Core Exynos processor.
In India , Samsung sells the the S4 with Octa Core Exynos processor .
Some Samsung guy trying to say something.
The looks , build quality & overall appearance of the S4 all inspire a premium feel.
I did have the time to take a quick overview of the phone & run some benchmarks , & the results were very good overall.

Interface

I found the interface to be pretty , much like any android device , nothing out of the world , but still simple to use.
Moving between pages was smooth , animations worked as they should have.

Home Screen

S4's Home Screen
The home screen somewhat resembles other Samsung models . Still , it would have been preferred to have something a bit more flamboyant given its current processing & graphics power .

Dialor

Dialor
The Dialor is simple in looks & usage , with video calling facility available . I did have a look at the Xperia Z , & was surprised that Sony hasn't given this feature in their dialor {Needs further Investigation}

Messaging

The messaging App
Typing messages on the phone is very simple , & the keyboard is very good. Given the 5" screen , typing words is not an issue at all .

INFO

Android Version

The Samsung S4 runs on Android Jelly Bean version 4.2.2

Notification Panel

Single Swipe

two finger swipe
With the Android Jelly Bean installed, you can access recent notifications from the panel as well as access settings by using a two finger swipe. Not much has been changed here by Samsung.

Settings

The Settings panel of Android 4.2.2 incorporates 4 tabs , namely
1-Connections - Wifi, Bluetooth , etc. All connectivity options.
2-My Device - Apps installed , etc.
3-Accounts - Accounts to be managed..
4-More - Other remaining settings options.

Storage

I have been reading a lot recently about the fiasco of the S4 not having as much storage as promised.
The 16 GB model is being reported as having only 8 Gb of available memory.
Actually , its 8.82 GB of Storage that is available.
Samsung says an SD Card can be used to expand the storage upto 64 GB.
Valid point.
But why not just mention that this device has only around 8 GB of available internal storage.
If you have the Phone , use SD card to install all your Apps & Games .
{ Its an option available in the settings }

Internet

This one are where the 5" inch screen really comes into play.
Due to its pretty high resolution , everything looks good. A pretty fast CPU endures that there is no lag while changing tabs , typing , scrolling , etc.
My Blog on the S4 { in desktop mode }
Browsing was smooth , web pages loaded up quickly & there was no visible lag.
Google's page on the S4

Benchmarks

I ran a number of benchmarks on it to see how the S4 performs .
The Exynos Octa core is the first of its kind , so it required some tests to be run.
The Octa core works on the Big-Little combination of ARM.
There are 4 Cortex A15 high performance cores coupled with 4 Cortex A7 low power low battery consuming cores.

Quadrant Benchmark

Galaxy S4 Quadrant Benchmark
I have seen higher scores being put up in quadrant time & time again , but 11,898 is really high.
The phone scores high scores in every department .Still , the memory should have been higher. I'v seen a score of around 8,000 in memory on the Xolo x900. So the S4 should have been atleast more than that.Still , it gets one of the highest scores in the market.

Nenamarks 2

Nenamark is a test aimed at testing the Graphic capabilites on the phone.
It runs a video with high amount of animation & gives the average FPS in the end.
During the test , it hits 59-60 FPS all the time.
After bench marking the Galaxy S4 , I believe time has come for Nenamark3 to be made by the developer.Since the S4 manages 60 FPS { which is the highest a device can get on Nenamark2}.
Nenamark2 result

Multitouch Test

This test gives the number of touch that will be registered at a time by a device.
The S4 seems to be getting the maximum here , too.
Multitouch Sensor test

Linpack

Linpack tests the CPU of the phone & gives a result
It has two tests, Single Thread & Multi Thread.
Linpack - Single Thread.
Linpack - Multi Thread

Since Nenamark was not able to give a perfect picture of the Graphics capabilities , I ran Two other Graphics based benchmarks to test the Gpu of the S4.

Basemark ES 2.0 Taiji Free

This is a simple benchmark where a video of an animated girl which stresses on the Open GL2.0 performance of the phone.
the S4 got 39.44 in the test I ran .
S4 scores around 40 on Basemark Taiji

KFS Benchmark

KFS is a simple benchmark that stresses the CPU & GPU for 3 different graphics environments & gives the average FPS as the result.
The S4 scores 30.743 , which is really not that high compared to other smartphones.
30 Fps on KFS Benchmark for the S4.

Battery Life

The battery on the phone is well equipped to handle the Exynos Octa Core chipset , & will surely last a full day or even two days on moderate usage.

My Verdict

The S4 is selling for 33k in the Indian market .
With its current specs & asthetics , it is a hit among the premium end buyers .
If you are looking for a new high end Android phone , I would recommend having a look at the Xperia Z too , as it is a Water Proof smartphone { something that the S4 lacks }.
Also, its design is a bit more pleasing.

Overall , the phone was smooth & fast but I did encounter a few minor lags occasionally { which should not have been there }.
The HTC One is a good option too , if you can find it .

Android Music Player Review: JetAudio vs PlayerPro

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 25 Mei 2013 0 komentar

Listening to music is probably one of the most usable features of Android Smartphones. So useful that some manufactures boast about the capability of their smartphones musical capability.

I'm using Asus Padfone 2 and the original Samsung Galaxy Note N7000, despite of being the underdog compared to Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4, Sony Xperia Z, and HTC One, I'm quite surprise that musically it is a capable, if not excellent, audio player. It has flat neutral tone and clarity as a player.  So all I need is to find the most capable Audio/Music Player application for this PadFone2.

Side note: sound reproduction quality Asus Padfone 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note: SGNote is warmer with more power on bass, but details rather sacrificed. Asus Padfone 2 is flatter with tighter bass and higher details. Quality wise, Asus Padfone 2 wins.

I have been testing several apps ever since I owned Asus Padfone 2: Google Music, WinAmp, PowerAmp, JetAudio, Neutron Player, PlayerPro and SoundMax.

My requirements for suitable music player are as follows:
- It needs to be able to play FLAC and Wave lossless format music
- Clarity for details and sound stage
- Flat tone preferences
- Able to support my collection of headphones and earphones
- All those must be fulfilled without any equalizer adjustment (EQ off)
Note: Equalizer needs to be off or set to flat/normal to make sure that the sound characteristic tuning is accordingly to the recorders/musicians attended sound or musical characteristics.

Out of all, I dropped out Google Music (no FLAC playing), WinAmp (sound quality not to my preference), and PowerAmp (too much sibilance and bad sound staging).  Later on, I dropped SonicMax, despite it is the only app and does BBE sound setting and very customizable, it doesn't have the EQ off setting, meaning everything is already set as sound tuning effect and it is the most bass-focussed player I tested.

The selection comes to JetAudio and PlayerPro.  Both have similar characteristics:
- Play FLAC and WAVE
- Read Folders
- Able to play music as it is (EQ off)
- Good sound tone characteristics: excellent brightness (excellent details, excellent sound separations, acceptable sound staging)
- Both can support my headphones and earphones (Super lux HD381F, UE700, Sennheiser MX760, Ultrasone HFI 450 and Jays V-Jays)
- Both have simulated amp setting, to adjust the volume out to support bigger headphones (preamp setting), pretty good for my Ultasone HFI 450 since it requires higher amp out.

The differences are as follows:

(Pre-note: songs used for testing are GnR's Welcome to the Jungle, Hans Zimmer's Molossus, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerard's Now We are Free, Yasuharu Takanashi's Fairy Tail Theme, Slipknot's Psychosocial,  Susan Wong's First of May, Nightwish's Wish I Had an Angel, and Maroon 5's Move Like Jagger.)

JetAudio:
- Mid frequency is adequate, almost every vocals sound as they are supposed to sound, except when the singer has the tendency of having higher pitch sound characteristic (it rolled off)
- Bass impact is excellent, tight but powerful, all music become warmer
- High frequency details is adequate and controllable, no sibilance.
- Sound staging is leaning towards a smaller space; imagine you are listening the music in your bedroom or living room, you can allocate the source and they are at close range.
- Sound separation detail is sacrificed due to the enhancement of bass tonality. Nightwish's Wish I Had an Angel lost its cymbals percussions and parts of bass guitar. Hans Zimmer's Molossus percussions are inseparable.
- PreAmp enables the songs to have higher power up to a small level
- However, when played using speakers, JetAudio sounds excellent and well balanced and relax, if not laid back. Very enjoyable.
- Gapless play is poor quality. Not recommended, better turn it off.
- Recommended for pop, hip hop, dance, techno and other genres that requires more bass tonality.

PlayerPro:
- Mid frequency is good and clear
- Bass is tight and less boomy, but keeps adequate impact.
- High frequency is very good, producing details and controlled treble. Sibilance only heard when using higher PreAmp level.
- Sound staging is acceptable. I can recognize where were the musicians of each instrument were located.
- Sound separation is surprisingly better, the separation of each instrument is clearer in symphonic metal and classical musics.
- PreAmp enables the song to have higher power up to a small level
- Recommended for acoustic, classical, jazz, rock and metal songs.

With this summary, I recommend PlayerPro. Get the paid version since it comes with 2x equalizer adjustment frequency to tweak for those who prefer customized music reproduction.

Smart Launcher

Posted by Unknown Senin, 13 Mei 2013 0 komentar
There are a huge number of launchers available for Android.
Some give a new look to android , some aim to make your phone look like
Windows phone{Launcher 8},
IOS{Espier--http://akshaypundir.blogspot.in/2013/04/make-your-android-look-like-iphone-for.html }
etc..
But, Smart Launcher is something significantly different .
What sets it apart is the approach it takes to modify the Android interface.
The Home screen doesn't have tons of available pages , but has a single home screen .
You get a clock on the top , with the lower area reserved for the Apps shortcut & the drawer.

Smart Launcher home screen.

The way the shortcuts are placed and the animation is pretty simple & it blends with overall look of the launcher.
 On installing , the launcher will ask you the default apps for the 6 shortcuts { I haven't found a way to change to change the shortcut settings , so choose with caution}
The process of touching a small bubble to activate the shortcuts is new & is usable , and attractive as well.
Smart launcher , with shortcuts activated.

The drawer shortcut is placed on the Lower left corner of the screen .The Apps in the drawer have been separated into 6 headings , namely:
Communication , Internet , Games , Media , Utility , Settings.
The respective apps are housed under specific heads , making the drawer look pretty neat.
Games section
Media Section
The settings are accessible by pressing the menu key { on devices that have it } or the options menu on the drawer.
You can change the shortcut looks , clock style , background for shortcuts{ black or white only in free version } among other things.
Settings panel

The Apps icon size & some other feature can be changed too ,

The Launcher is very simple in its approach , yet it presents an interface that is better than Android's & even IOS.
If you are using Nova, Go Launcher and just want to try something new , do give it a try.

NOTE: Widgets are available only in the Full version .

The RAM usage of this launcher varied between 25 MB to 50 MB on my  phone .
Low usage

High usage

So I'l advice you to have at least 60-70 MB RAM free before you replace your current launcher.x
