Service Center Adventure Report

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 30 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
As you might know, I have been using various brand of mobile phones: Motorola, Apple, Samsung, BlackBerry, HTC and Asus. Part of buying a new phone is also to know what and how is their Service Center works. If your phone has problems, you ight need to face them.

Here are my Reviews on branded phone and their Service Center:

1. Motorola

I have used Motorola Milestone, the GSM version of the original Motorola Droid for international market, for about nearly 2 years. It was my first Android phone.
The phone unit is heavy for its size, being made mostly from metal. The physical keyboard added it's weight. However, I have never have any problem with this unit and never sent it to service center. Brilliant product.
However, Motorola Service Center in Indonesia can be considered rare and hard to find. I don't know whether they are confident of their products or just too expensive to open more.

2. Apple's iPad

Well, it's obviously not a phone and don't make calls. But it is a gadget using SIM card and mobile Internet, so I put it in this list.
Service Centers are spread well. Easy to find also, like in Ratu Plaza, Roxy and Mangga Dua. However, the spare parts are too expensive, the service time is too long coz they need to send it to Singapore.
Unit itself is sturdy as long as you don't drop it. If you do, you're out of luck and need to prepare for the headache of expensive replacement spare parts.

3. Samsung

My first Samsung smartphone is Samsung Galaxy Note N7000, I bought it at its launch after waiting in a long line.
Out of all the service centers, Samsung is probably has the best valued service centers. Easy to find, service is adequate, if not better than competitors, and considerably Fast. Faster than competitors. In max 4 days, you either get your phone fixed or get to know when it will be done. The spare parts, although some are expensive, are reasonably priced. You know you bought a good phone that gets the best after sales when you buy a Samsung smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Note is famous for having charger USB connector problems. Mine was the power input board got fried. So know it and be prepared.

4. BlackBerry

Fast, but illegal. Confused? BlackBerry, like other American companies, underestimate the huge population number of Indonesia, hence they don't immediately open a Service Center. So tons of non-motorized service centers Pop out everywhere. If you want the authorized service center, your unit will be sent to Singapore.
About 5 years ago, they finally open an office in Jakarta and has several authorized services centers. Nice strategy, fast service means losing your warranty. But for customers, bad after sales services for years and years
All BlackBerry units have problems with the pointing tools, track balls or track pads.

5. HTC

Among all, I must congratulate HTC as the worst service center for international companies, even worse than the local ones.
The staffs are polite but always ask to wait. My phone was held for repaired for 2 months and was asked to wait for another month. Apparently, this happens all over the world. Better avoid HTC if you can.
HTC always have spare parts problems, whether it's the screen or the charger connector or whatever. However, they do creatively build a functional and useful smartphones among all brands.

6. Asus

Asus Padfone 2 can be considered a successful smartphone / tablet. However the unit is easily damaged. You dropped it, just cry and don't bother to repair it. The spare parts are expensive.
The service staffs are very friendly and they always do what they promised. However, Asus internal procedure is slow. It took them 1 week to diagnose the problem, 1 more week to repair it if they have the spare part.

7. Nokia

Is probably the most experienced and the most professional among all smartphone service centers. Their service centers are located in the busiest phone reseller centers and each region has at least 1.
You probably need to wait in a long line cause they have the most units of mobile phones sold, but the service is quick, polite, spare parts always ready, and reasonably priced.

I put Nokia Service Center as the best smartphone service center in Indonesia.

Other brands that I have not been able to review is Sony, Huawei, ZTE, and LG. I have never used any of their devices so it's not fair for me to review them.

So there, those are my reviews of smartphones' brands' service centers. Feel free to leave any comment and share your experience also.

HOW TO Root Samsung Galaxy S3 Easily [Step by Step Guide]

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 24 Agustus 2013 0 komentar

Samsung Galaxy S III has barely reached a few countries after its launch and it has already been rooted by Android developers at XDA forums. This process to obtain root involves flashing an insecure kernel using Odin.

The whole process for rooting Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty simple to do and even those people who‘re not familiar with rooting should find it easy, given that all the mentioned steps are followed carefully and in proper order. Without wasting any more time, let’s move ahead and learn how to root Samsung Galaxy s3.
Prerequisites for Rooting Samsung Galaxy S3
  1. Make sure that Samsung Kies is installed on your computer. It contains necessary phone drivers required for rooting. (Official Download Link).
  2. Neither the phone nor the computer/laptop should accidentally switch off in between the rooting process. It might damage your phone forever. Maintain a battery of atleast 40%-60% in Galaxy S3 and either use a laptop or a desktop with an UPS. (At your Own Risk)
  3. Your Galaxy S 3 will lose warranty after this process. Though, you can unroot Samsung Galaxy S3 anytime to get back warranty.

Files Needed
Download:
Odin 3.04 – A Windows tool for flashing kernels, ROMs etc., to an Android phone.

CF-Root – aka root for beginners. Download the latest version from the page.

Only proceed if your device model is GT-I9300 or GT-I9300T. If your model number has a suffix, it may not work and may even brick your phone. To check your model version, go to Settings > About phone and scroll down to the bottom.
Steps on How to Root Samsung Galaxy S3

Step 1. Enable debugging mode in your phone by going to:

Settings > Developer Options > Check USB Debugging

Step 2. Power-off your Galaxy S3 and then start it in Download Mode by simultaneously pressing Volume-down + Home + Power buttons.

Step 3. Plug your Samsung Galaxy S3 to a computer using a microUSB cable (that one provided with your phone).

Step 4. Launch Odin. The first box under the text ID:COM will light up to yellow

If the box doesn’t turn yellow, it’s an indication that you’re doing something wrong. Go back to Step 1 and see if you’ve completed every step properly.

Also, ensure that Flash lock and Re-Partition are not checked.

Step 5. In Odin, Click on PDA and choose the zip file that you’ve just downloaded.

Now, we’re ready to flash. Hit the Start button and grab a popcorn.

After completion, your device will now be rooted. Feel free to ask any questions related to rooting Samsung Galaxy 3 by dropping a comment below

iWork for iCloud beta now open to anyone with an Apple ID

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 23 Agustus 2013 0 komentar

First it was available to developers, then a select few who received invitations, and now the beta of iWork for iCloud is available for all. Apple's made no official announcement, but point your browser to icloud.com, punch in your Apple ID details, and there you have it: Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Seeming as you normally have to pay for the iWork software suite, this could be a time-sensitive public beta that'll be pulled once you've found all the bugs (this editor has full access without owning any of the iWork programs). So, you might as well have a go at being productive in the cloud before it's too late.

iOS 7: What’s Changed Between Beta 1 and Beta 6

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

We covered extensively the details of iOS 7 when the OS was in Beta 1. We urged our readers to stay patient with it since it was obviously a Beta release and was missing stability for being a daily driver.

Since then, a lot of water has passed under that bridge and six iterations of Betas later, we have iOS 7 Beta 6 released last week. As registered iOS developers, we got chance to flash the Beta 6 version of iOS 7 and thought of giving it a shot once again. A lot has obviously changed obviously. Here are some of our observations of using Beta 6 from Beta 1 on iOS 7.

In case you missed out, you can check out our initial impressions of iOS 7 Beta 1here
The Animations Look Smoother

The animations stuttered their way around when we were using iOS 7 in Beta 1. They look a lot smoother and easier on the eye now. There is no jerkiness and transitions look a little more comforting to the eye. They still look a little slow, since we have been used to lots of cuts in iOS 6 which are pretty fast. This does give a feeling of slowness of the phone, but overall, they are a lot smoother and uniform across the board.
Fewer App Crashes

Pretty much expected, it is no surprise that on Beta 6 we have experienced far fewer app crashes and random behavior. Apart from a couple of times where the text field simply disappeared behind the keyboard and the Official Twitter app requiring long press on tabs to change them, things have been better. There is an odd moment when if you tap the app and it does not respond, but again, these instances are far and few now, a lot better than Beta 1.
The Icons look Better

It could simply be that we have adapted to the whole, iOS 7 theme and general flatness but icons look a lot better. They are definitely flatter than the first beta and color schemes have been changed on a few of them. Subtle changes or drastic ones, they definitely add a good look factor to iOS 7 now. Things are a lot more usable in the sense you do not feel that Apple have decided to simply put every single color on the palette in their OS.

Lesser neons or maybe we are used to it, whatever it is, its not as hideous
Battery is still meh

We know things are in Beta and eventually Apple will sort it out, but we have huge concerns for the battery life of iPhones on iOS 7. Simply, because there is a lot more under the hood, going on in iOS 7 than iOS 6. There is the whole dynamic wallpaper which means your gyro is constantly in use and obviously very heavy animation usage. We hope Apple do add in a feature where we can turn off the whole dynamic wallpaper thing, its pretty pointless. We got through our day with about 30% battery left in the tank, with iOS 7 Beta 6, it was down to about 5%.

However, till there is a Gold Master Edition, Battery performance can be excused, but its certainly something that Apple need to handle well, they struggled with battery backup on iOS 6 for a couple of versions too, and we can certainly see similar things happening again.
The Sensors Respond Better Overall

The sensors have definitely got better with time. We had terrible experience with auto brightness turned on where phone would actually lower the brightness in direct light and increase it in darkness. Also proximity sensor seems to be fixed, we did have issues on Beta 1 when even though call was disconnected the screen stayed blank and you had to wave in front of it to wake it up.
Settings App is a lot more Refined

There were major things missing from Settings App on iOS 7 Beta 1. Things like lack of Notifications previews, wrong app icons and grey color for input of passcodes. All that seems to have been sorted and finally settings app looks somewhere usable.
Miscellaneous

The music controls no longer overlap with the clock on Lockscreen. The keyboard though, is still stock on most apps as they have not been optimized for iOS 7. There are no more random deletion of text messages, and we are very thankful for that. Also improved is the Top bar, which used to disappear or simply behave randomly strange on iOS 7 Beta 1. Call quality has improved too.
Conclusion

By no means, again this is a conclusive article as far as iOS 7 goes, even in Beta. You cannot judge something in Beta unless you get to the Gold Master Edition. However, we like the direction in which Apple is taking iOS 7 and there is a good chance it may actually grow on us by the time it is out. A lot of issues that exist could well be ironed out and nobody would even remember this article by us.

Zen Ultrafone 701 HD : A Great Value for Money!

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The budget smartphone market is getting very competitive these days, especially with the Indian players like Zen giving the likes of Samsung, Sony & Nokia a run for their money. We were given a unit of Zen Ultrafone 701 HD for review. My initial impression was Wow!! I hadn’t expected anything like that from a phone which was priced at a little under 12k. The UI was very smooth & it didn’t have any major lags.

Anyways, after having played with the device for over 1 month, here is my detailed review of Zen Ultrafone 701 HD.

The Box

The Box contained the usual accessories like charger, headphone and the USB cable. Let me tell you, you won’t be very impressed at the look and feel of them. You also get extra cases (2 in number) and a scratch guard.

Design

The design is pretty much conventional. Well expecting something different from a 12k phone would be wrong in itself. But you will over all like the way it looks and feels. It has rounded corners and a curved back, pretty standard. The Handset fits in well in the hand and you can very well operate it with just one hand.

The front of the phone has the 5 inch 1280×720 IPS LCD screen, covered by glass throughout. The 294 ppi pixel density display is as sharp as you’d expect it to be. Above the display you have the ear piece, the usual pair of sensors and the front facing camera. On the left is the notification LED. It is one of the better screens in this price range with a balanced colour reproduction, good brightness and contrast. You may have issues looking into the screen outdoors and may have to stare for a longer duration to make out things. You may over come this by setting the brightness to full, but still reflectivity is an issue.

Hardware

The Zen smartphone sports some impressive hardware that includes a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels and pixel density of 294 ppi, an 8MP primary camera and a 2000mAh battery. Out of the available 1 GB of RAM, only 972 MB is usable, and is good enough for most tasks, even gaming.

If you are worried about the Apps using up the internal memory, then you can easily specify the micro SD card slot as the default installation media. So it’s pretty handy.
Software

The Zen Ultrafone 701 HD runs on Android 4.2.1 JellyBean. The interface is almost 98% true to stock with the exception of the messaging app, the camera and some other additional apps that have been modified, but you will almost get a very recognizable stock experience from this device.

Few Google apps and a lot of third party apps like Facebook, Skype, Whatsapp, Saavn, MX Player, file manager, ToDo, Sound recorder, flashlight and a colornote app and Times of India come pre installed. Music player and the video player are modified to a greater extent. The FM radio app could playback and record stations in stereo.
Zen specific apps include the Zen update centre for quick firmware updates over the air and the Zen mini store for a curated list of apps from the Android Play Store.

I did come across a few software glitches. First being, the Photos didn’t just appear in the gallery. Also I came across a situation where, though there were images in the gallery, I wasn’t actually able to see them. It kept saying “No Thumbnail”. I had to restart my phone a couple of times, before I was finally able to access the images properly. May be an isolated case, but just thought of mentioning this because if you too are facing such a problem, there is no need to panic, a few restarts or at max, a software upgrade and you should be fine!

Camera

If you ask me one major let down of Zen Ultrafone 701HD, I would say it’s the camera. It’s a 8 megapixel rear facing with back side illuminated sensor and a LED. You can get decent shots in the daytime but expect them to be far from natural! The real problem arises when there is low light, the pictures are of terrible quality. Here again one would argue, it’s just a 12k phone; well, we have had better Cameras even at this range! The 3.2 MP facing camera is good enough for video calling.
The camera UI is very similar to the other MediaTek based devices and offers extensive control over the various aspects of still and the video camera. While the HDR mode proved of no use, the sweep panorama mode called multi angle and the auto-scene selection mode were useful at times. You may want to give the other features like face beautification and the normal panorama mode a try, but nothing to be really enchanted with.
Connectivity and call quality

One of the major reasons why you will buy this phone is it being Dual Sim compatible. Let me tell you, you will not be let down. The dual SIM features works quite well, and the SIM management settings were robust with granular control over each SIM’s voice and data parameters.

The device is packed with all the connectivity options you’d expect, like WiFi b/g/n, 3G HSPA, Dual SIM(GSM+GSM), Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. The call quality was good, but the external loudspeaker didn’t prove to be a good option for conference calls, as it was too quiet even for loud music. As a consequence, the ringtones were quiet too.
The 3G speeds were fast and WiFi held on as good as other devices.
Battery Life

With a 2000 mAH battery, the Zen Ultrafone 701 HD gets through a day very easily. In fact, it was much better in performance than the competition, having tested most of them. There are no fancy power saving modes or anything, as there is not much need for it.
Performance

The Zen Ultrafone 701HD is a great performer at its price-range and stands tall at the top in most benchmarks. Here’s a comparison between benchmarks of Zen Ultrafone 701HD, Xolo Q1000 & Micromax Canvas HD.

Comparison : Zen Ultrafone 701HD, Xolo Q1000 & Micromax Canvas HD

Well, I do understand it’s pretty confusing which phone buy when there isn’t much of a difference between what they have to offer. Here’s a comparative table, which shows how similar their specs are!

So the only differentiating factor there, seems to be the Price!!!
Verdict

Most of the phones in this price range are targeted towards cost conscious individuals, so obviously even a difference of a thousand bucks is significant. Even otherwise, it is the value for money that matters the most. If you are looking for a phone under 12k and if you are not too much of a perfectionist and can do with minor compromises, Zen Ultrafone 701HD is the phone for you! The Zen Ultrafone 701HD is a very good buy especially considering that it’s less expensive than both the Micromax Canvas HD and the XOLO Q1000, and provides equal, if not better, performance in almost all departments. If you’re looking for a smartphone that does justice to your music and videos, the Zen won’t disappoint you.

PROS

• Great Value for Money
• Excellent battery-life
• Solid build
• Great performance

CONS

• Camera in low-light
A Word of Caution

The Facebook page of Zen Mobile has few comments from people who reportedly found glitch in the phone’s screen after using it for just a few weeks. This is likely to be an issue with specific units but it also looks like that Zen is having some quality control problems.

MFi Technical for iOS Device

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 22 Agustus 2013 0 komentar
If you want to access MFi technical specifications and/or sample quantities of licensed components for development purposes you can apply for development license. The MFi Manufacturing License is need by companies who will manufacture MFi accessories as finished goods.

If you want to develop cases for iPhone, iPad or iPod you don’t need any license. Low Energy/BTLE/Bluetooth 4.0 or standard Bluetooth profiles supported by iOS are not part of the MFi Program so if you want to develop any products using Bluetooth then you don’t need MFi License. If you are an iOS application developer and want to develop app that communicates with MFi accessory then you don’t need MFi license.

After your device approved by Apple you have to make changes to your iphone application to support that hardware and communicate with device. Changes should be as follow,
  1. Provide external accessory framework for communicating with external hardware connected to an iOS-based device through the 30-pin dock connector or wirelessly using Bluetooth.
  2. Configure info.plist file correctly to support external accessories. Include the UISupportedExternalAccessoryProtocols key to declare the specific hardware protocols your application supports into info.plist file.
  3. Import external accessory framework that used to communicate with accessories attached to your iOS device. This is useful to integrate accessory level features into your iOS app.
  4. Create EASession object, which is useful for managing the accessory interactions. Data transfer in your app occurs through NSInputStream and NSOutputStream objects.
  5. Accessories are not visible until its connected to iDevices. Application can get the appropriate accessory object and open a session using one or more of the protocols supported by the accessory.

The iPhone or iOS application developer should be in touch with manufacturer of device to understand different configuration of device, Input/output support by device, services provided by device etc. External device must support set of protocols for sending and receiving data between device and application.
