Nokia Lumia 2520 Review

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 09:01 PM PST

Nokia is bringing their first Windows 8.1 RT tablet to market, but is it the right choice?

In a few hours, Nokia's first Windows RT 8.1 tablet goes on sale in the US on Verizon (AT&T gets it just 24 hours later). It's a momentous step both for Nokia and Microsoft, who so far have had a tough sell with the RT. In fact, Microsoft and Nokia are the last two manufactures to offer the stripped down version of Windows, with other OEMs opting for the more powerful 32-bit version on an Intel Atom or i5 processor.

So does Nokia have what it takes to spark some life back into the Windows tablet market? And what about Microsoft's own Surface 2? Read on for our full review of the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet.

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 07:31 PM PST

Nokia MixRadio Windows 8

We're pretty big fans of music app formerly known as Nokia Music. Earlier today, Nokia put out a refreshed Windows Phone app for their music service. Along with the new app came a rebranding from Nokia Music to Nokia MixRadio. So we're not too surprised to see an update for the Windows 8 version of Nokia's music offering.

Electronic Arts headquarters sign Redwood City

The Xbox One launch is fast approaching, with many game publishers lined up to publish launch titles for the new console. One of those publishers is Electronic Arts, who have Battlefield 4 and Need for Speed: Rivals ready for Xbox One.

In celebration if the impending launch, EA invited us to their headquarters in Redwood City, CA to check out a couple of Xbox One exclusive titles they have coming in the months ahead. We can't talk about those games just yet, but I can share my experiences and impressions of the gigantic publisher's sprawling base of operations.

Mint for Windows Phone arrives in the Store, but you can’t have it yet

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 05:08 PM PST

It looks like today wasn't going to all be about Instagram and Waze, as the official Mint app (www.mint.com) was also close to release. At least, that's what the November 20 Store listing from Intuit Inc. suggests. Mint was announced as coming to Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 back in June and it looks to be readying for launch. The popular financial management app is wanted by many who rely on the service, especially to access it on the go.

Reader of the site Travis B. passed on the link to us, which also has a single screenshot from the forthcoming app. However, if you click to download Mint, you are met with an error stating you don't have permission to download, hinting that this is not yet public.

Download the Xbox One "day one offline update" on your PC to avoid busy Xbox servers

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 04:02 PM PST

Xbox One

It's already set in stone that Microsoft's next-generation console, the Xbox One will require a day one patch - just like the PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, with the next Xbox, you'll not be able to play any games (or really do anything at all) until you've installed the update.

Luckily, should you be afraid that something may go wrong on the day to prevent you from getting on with some gaming, Microsoft has made an offline version of the day one patch available for manual installation via a USB drive.

6snap, the unofficial Snapchat client for Windows Phone 8, is now available

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 02:36 PM PST

If there's one app left standing for Windows Phone users, it would be Snapchat. The popular photo messaging app that allows your pics to 'expire' after a pre-determined viewing time does not have an official client for Windows Phone, but today we have the next best thing.

Developed by Rudy Huyn, the mind behind 6tag and 6sec, also very popular unofficial apps for Instagram and Vine, 6snap has been in the works for the last few weeks. Today, the app is available to all with Windows Phone 8 devices and it does not disappoint.

Head past the break for our video first-look and more information on where to get it.

Xbox One

It will not be long until the Xbox One consoles will find their way to entertainment centers and we are pleased to share that a dedicated YouTube app will be available from day one.

Microsoft Xbox team member Larry Hryb (aka @majornelson) shared the good news over on Twitter about an hour ago.  We do not know whether or not if the app will be a "view only" type app or if it will have Kinect integration for recording and uploading videos.

Microsoft says Windows Phone has hit ‘critical mass’ with latest app push

Windows Phone Apps--critical mass?

Has Windows Phone finally come of age? Microsoft emphatically says 'yes'

With today's announcement that Instagram has arrived for Windows Phone along with Waze (Mint and Xbox Video are still "coming soon"), Windows Phone as an operating system has finally reached a significant turning point. At least according to Microsoft.

We recently sat down with Todd Brix, General Manager, Windows Apps and Store at Microsoft, who walked us through some of the recent accomplishments. Brix and Microsoft are claiming that with the recent spate of app releases, a "critical mass" has finally pushed Windows Phone into the big leagues. Windows Phone now has parity on most of the top download apps found on iOS and Android with an "85% overlap" in top-25 titles, according to the company.

Waze gets directions, finds a new home on Windows Phone and is now available

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 11:09 AM PST

Waze for Windows Phone

Today, Windows Phone users are finally treated to a new app and service that has been long in the making: Waze. First announced back in June, Waze has been undergoing a private (but detailed) beta testing period to ensure the highest quality. Although it was reported as having no ETA back in October, the app is finally ready for public release. That despite unfounded concerns that its new owners, Google, would cancel the project. But today, Microsoft and Waze are announcing its general availability.

Waze is an extremely popular navigation and traffic app that relies on social interaction for real-time updates. Considered to be a community-driven application, Waze differs from regular GPS navigation apps by relying on user feedback for traffic, travel times, accidents, police traps, and more with user ability to modify maps and roads. It's a fascinating service with around 50 million users worldwide, mostly found on Android and iOS.

Instagram (beta) for Windows Phone is now here

Instagram For Windows Phone

Today, Microsoft and Facebook (Burbn) have announced the arrival of the official Instagram app for Windows Phone. It's been a long time in the making but this is the moment you have all been waiting for.

Announced a few weeks ago in Abu Dhabi during Nokia World, Instagram for Windows Phone has been one of the most coveted and sought after applications for the rapidly growing platform. Constantly cited as the one big "missing apps" for consumers (and being one of the searched for in the Store), Instagram's arrival has come at an opportune time, seeing as Windows Phone is gaining market share fervently these days.

The service is simple in concept and execution, but it was the right app at the right time. Users simply take photos from their smartphone (or taken live within the app) and can optionally apply a set of retro-filters, giving it a Polaroid-like effect. Users can then post the photo on their timeline within the app (also visible on the web) along with hashtags. By following and being followed, users can build up an audience around those who want a visual experience. Text is minimal as the focus is to let the image tell the story. Images can be cross-posted to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and more.

Kingdoms & Lords Review: Conquer rival kingdoms on Windows Phone 8

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 07:56 AM PST

Kingdoms & Lords for Windows Phone

City-building games with timers are increasingly common on mobile platforms. Xbox Windows Phone has seen a few, including Gameloft's own Ice Age Village. These games lure players in with their initially rapid progression and lots of loot to collect. But the longer one plays, the less new things there are to see and the more the feeling of sameness pulls in. Do we keep playing them for fun or out of habit?

So the question becomes how to make a city builder with real lasting appeal – one that keeps providing players a reason to play and maybe even spend some money. Electronic Arts found a clever way to do so by adding timers to its Sims franchise and calling it Sims FreePlay. Now Gameloft returns to the genre with Kingdoms & Lords. The hook: they've thrown strategic battles into the mix.
