Vector Runner Remix and the TreSensa game engine arrive on Windows Phone 8

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 04:21 AM PST

Vector Runner Remix for Windows Phone

It's always good news when a new game engine adds Windows Phone 8 support. Game engines make it easier to develop games for a platform and increase the number of games that can be ported from other platforms. Win-win.

We mention this because the TreSensa Platform engine officially began supporting Windows Phone at the beginning of this month. The first game to use the engine is Vector Runner Remix from DigYourOwnGrave and TreSensa. Vector Runner Remix is a simple, styling endless running type game (though the levels aren't endless). Head past the break to learn more about the game and TreSensa's future plans for Windows Phone!

The phone and browser for example, aren't anywhere near as full featured as the desktop application. But the web app is getting a pretty nifty update today that brings some new features that will be very welcomed among teams. Let's check out the new real-time, co-authoring features and more inside the Office Web Apps.

WhatsApp updated with bug fixes and two new languages

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 04:52 PM PST

It's been a couple of weeks since we last saw WhatsApp get updated. Like Facebook, WhatsApp is one of the most used apps on Windows Phone, so it's always great to see some tidying up on the app.

Today, version 2.11.298 has landed on the Store and while it doesn't pack a punch, it does bring along with it two minor tweaks.

Have Google Voice? Use Spare Phone to make free Wi-Fi calls on your Windows Phone

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 01:39 PM PST

Spare Phone for Windows Phone 8

For those with Google Voice accounts, the desire to have a true VOIP solution for Windows Phone has been around for a long time. We have apps like MetroTalk to help manage Google Voice and even make phone calls through a cellular provider, but that's not an actual VOIP system.

Spare Phone is a relatively new app to Windows Phone and it seems to do just that: make and receive calls purely over your data connection (either Wi-Fi or cellular data). The app works like a standard phone dialer, which can access your contacts and even maintain a call history.

Edit your photos in style with the clever Pic2share for Windows Phone

pic2share photo editing

Pic2share is a very simple photo-editing app that you might want to check out. It's great for those who might be intimidated by more advanced editing apps like Fhotoroom.

It's developed by college student, Thomas Tsopanakis, and powered by the Nokia Imaging SDK. We've covered a few of Tsopanakis's apps before, including Countdown, Galleries and InstaBlender. Are we fans of his work? You betcha.

Head past the break to see our walkthrough video of this outstanding app.

A tale of Lumia 1020 ecstasy and sadness after Amazon.com gaffe

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 11:37 AM PST

Earlier this morning, if you had your ear to the ground like we do, you may have heard that Amazon had an amazing offer: the yellow Nokia Lumia 1020 on AT&T for just $199. Why is that a big deal?

That was the off-contract no-strings-attached price.

Amazing Weather HD for Windows Phone 8 updated, covers minor fixes

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 11:10 AM PST

Amazing Weather HD

Amazing Weather HD is one of our favorite Windows Phone weather apps and the Windows Phone 8 version just got updated.

The update mainly fine tunes Amazing Weather HD by providing better support for Meteoalarm.eu, adding new Simplified Chinese and Hungarian languages, fixes lock screen updates that weren't matching the weather and added optional usage stats.

Improved support for Meteoalarm.eu will give our European readers more reliable severe weather alerts. The reporting of usage stats is optional and can be turned off in Amazing Weather HD's settings.

Facebook Error

Update 5PM ET: Microsoft's Joe Belfiore has Tweeted that Facebook is working on a fix right now. Stand by...

Facebook is one of the top social networks available today and is an important part of millions of lives. Windows Phone sports integration with the service, pulling content from the network for contacts and more. We've received reports that synchronising accounts appear to be failing, so what's going on?

Mix your pics with InstaBlender to augment your photo creativity

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 10:14 AM PST

InstaBlender

When it comes to increasing originality with your photos, using filters isn't enough. It's too easy and really requires no skill. Photo blending, on the other hand, is much more difficult. Your creations can verge on being really bad if not done right, but if you can nail it, you'll make something really unique.

InstaBlender for Windows Phone is from developer Thomas Tsopanakis, who's made other apps like the popular app Countdown.

Nokia Copter

Nokia Poland has released a rather special app to the Windows Phone Store, enabling you to view all the footage the company recorded with the airborne Lumia 1020. We looked at Nokia providing a unique look at the Polish ctiy of Kraków the other day and while you're able to follow the Windows Phone on its journey through YouTube videos, the Nokia Copter app takes the experience that big further.

Microsoft Store lists Verizon Lumia 2520 tablet for Preorder, $499

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 07:54 AM PST

Update 1PM ET: As expected, Microsoft has pulled the pre-order page

Microsoft has been busy lately with listing preorders on their Store and then pulling them once we report on it. That tells us that these pages are made in advance but are not meant to go public quite yet. Still, we have reports that Microsoft are honoring preorders that are placed before the pages are pulled.

This morning we have the Verizon Lumia 2520 Windows RT tablet available—in both red or black—for $499 with no contract. That price falls in line with what we are expecting, although we did reveal that Verizon will be offering the Nokia tablet for $399 on a two-year contract.

Build your own Tiny Tower in the Star Wars universe on Windows and Windows Phone

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 06:19 AM PST

Star Wars: Tiny Death Star

Star Wars: Tiny Death Star is a business simulation game developed by Disney Mobile and NimbleBit (published by LucasArts), which has come to Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8, alongside Android and iOS devices.

The latest title is based on NimbleBit's previous hit game, Tiny Tower but is set in the Star Wars universe. Tiny Tower wasn't available for Windows Phone, so it's great to see LucasArts/NimbleBit on Windows Phone Store finally.

Flip Blox, a Windows Phone game that might surprise you

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 04:58 AM PST

Flip Blox

Flip Blox is a matching game for our Windows Phone that surprised us a little. The game's concept isn't new and calls for you to create combos of the same colored boxes for points.

You have a handful of gaming modes to keep things from getting stale and the animated faces on the boxes keeps things interesting.  Flip Blox comes across as an entertaining, casual game for our Windows Phones. Well suited for passing the time with.
