Panasonic today announced the DMC-GM1, a 16-megapixel interchangeable lens camera (ILC) that is the smallest Micro Four Thirds model we have seen from the company. This is the first model in Panasonic's new GM series, which consist of ILCs that are more consumer focused with smaller form factors and consumer-friendly colors.
The GM1 comes in black, silver, white and orange, and sports an artificial leather surface, giving it that retro vibe popular with users these days. It measures 98.5 x 54.9 x 23.5mm and weighs 203g without lens. In comparison, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II advanced compact is larger and heavier at 101.6 x 58.1 x 38.3mm and 281g, respectively. Of course, you do have to take into account that the GM1 could be significantly larger if you attach a heavy fixed or zoom lens to it.

According to Panasonic, the size reduction was achieved with changes made to the shutter unit, flash mechanism and main circuit board. In the case of the built-in flash, for example, a vertical spring action was added so that less space was needed to activate it compared with the flip-type unit found in the GX7's flash.
Other consumer friendly features include a touchscreen display for easier camera controls and built-in Wi-Fi so you can transfer images to smartphones more conveniently. In addition, Panasonic's Advanced IA+ mode makes it easy for beginners to start shooting, giving options for handheld night shots, HDR and a Scene Guide. This last feature shows sample images by professionals, letting you choose which one most closely matches the situation you are encountering so the camera can automatically pick the best settings. Of course, users can still opt to use the more advanced modes offered on all ILCs.
The built-in flash pops out vertically before flipping forward to save space.
The image sensor used in the GM1 is the new 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor, the same one found in theDMC-GX7 launched recently. In her review, CNET Australia's Lexy Savvides said the GX7 "delivers some of the sharpest images straight out of camera that we've seen from an ILC -- when paired with a premium prime or Leica lens." Hopefully the same results can be seen with the new GM1, too. Here are some of the camera's other key specifications:
16-megapixel Live MOS sensor
SDHC memory card slot
Full HD (1,920x1,080) video recording
802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (free smartphone apps available for iOS and Android)
Burst mode: up to 5fps with mechanical shutter or 40fps with electronic shutter
3-inch fixed touchscreen display
98.5 x 54.9 x 30.4mm / 204g (body, SD card and battery)
At the same time, the company has announced a new kit lens to go with the GM1. The Lumix G Vario 12-32mm/F3.5-5.6 lens features optical image stabilization and has a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 24 - 64mm. It is available in either black or silver.
Those who need something faster may prefer the company's new Leica DG Summilux 15mm/F1.7 ASPH lens. This fixed focus lens is the latest from the company to get the Leica certification, which means it should offer better image quality and will cost a lot more than regular Panasonic lenses.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 will sell with the new kit lens, and is expected to be available in Asia Pacific by December. Prices for the new camera and lenses have yet to be announced.
