Halo Spartan Assault dropping on Xbox One and Xbox 360 this December Posted: 29 Oct 2013 06:28 PM PDT Have you played Halo: Spartan Assault on your Windows Phone 8 or Windows 8 device? It's probably one of the best mobile games that's been produced from within Microsoft. It's been a fun game whether you're using your smartphone, tablet, or desktop. Gaming on the go not comfy enough for you? You'll soon be playing Spartan Assault on your Xbox 360 and Xbox One video game consoles. |
Nokia's double digit growth today bodes well for the Windows Phone platform Posted: 29 Oct 2013 03:38 PM PDT Today Nokia reported its most recent quarterly results. Lumia volumes were up 19% sequentially, hitting a new record of 8.8 million shipments. As Daniel pointed out earlier, these aren't anywhere near iPhone volumes. Apple shipped almost 38 million iPhones, or 4.3x more phone than Nokia Lumia this past quarter. But that shouldn't take away from Nokia's accomplishment. They are single-handedly responsible for making Windows Phone a viable competitor in the marketplace. Make no mistake, there is still a lot of work to be done, and we can only hope that the integration of the handset business with Microsoft goes smoothly, but Windows Phone stands a chance. Anytime a platform posts double digit sequential growth in shipments we're bound to see more developers take it seriously, not less. |
Download this: New Bing logo and lockscreen wallpaper Posted: 29 Oct 2013 02:49 PM PDT Earlier today, our sister site iMore covered the recently updated Bing app for iOS 7. The new version brings the familiar Metro graphics and new logo to the well-done search app. One of the eye catching new aspects is the load screen when you launch the app. It's one snazzy design—so much so we commented on it on Instagram. |
HTC 8X on AT&T joins its International sibling, receives Windows Phone Update 3 Posted: 29 Oct 2013 01:53 PM PDT It was only yesterday when we covered the International HTC 8X receiving Update 3 from Microsoft. Now we've had reports in from readers that AT&T 8X Windows Phones are also receiving the update. We've been able to confirm that the HTC 8X with the US mobile operator is indeed upgrading to the latest version of the OS (our 8X reports 8.0.10501.127). |

Burger for Windows Phone 8, for the short-order cook in all of us Posted: 29 Oct 2013 12:19 PM PDT Burger is a new Windows Phone 8 game that has you playing the role of a short-order cook at the local diner. You're tasked with filling orders as fast as you can, reaching a daily goal, before time runs out. Burger has experienced a decent amount of success over on the Android platform (get's 4.5 stars out of 5) and in playing Burger for a short time, the game does make a good first impression. |
Nokia brings RAW format support to the Lumia 1520; Lumia 1020 following soon Posted: 29 Oct 2013 12:03 PM PDT The camera in smartphones has improved over the years to the point where you can purchase a Windows Phone with a 41MP shooter. As well as the megapixels, Nokia also includes numerous features that come together to create a superb experience when snapping those special moments. The company is now looking to bring in RAW image format support. |
Medieval Math Battle, mathematics with a punch, hack and slash Posted: 29 Oct 2013 11:11 AM PDT Medieval Math Battle is an educational game for Windows Phone 8 that combines a fantasy adventure with basic math skills. You travel a Medieval world battling giant spiders, dragons, goblins and other mystical creatures. All the while learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Medieval Math Battle may not appeal to everyone but I've got to admit it's a fun way to learn the basics of math with. It's definitely a game worthy of our Windows Phone Kids Corner. |
6tag gets another update, brings some new optimizations and tweaks Posted: 29 Oct 2013 09:15 AM PDT The unofficial Instagram client for Windows Phone, 6tag, has received yet another update today. Version 2.0.2 has arrived on the Store and it brings with it a handful of user-requested fixes or features. As can be noted by the version number, it's not a huge overhaul, so many of the changes are minor but for some users, significant. So what's new? Head past the break to get the answer. |
Corona Labs announces SDK support for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store Apps Posted: 29 Oct 2013 09:02 AM PDT In the continuing push to lure developers, Microsoft and Corona Labs today have announced a collaboration to bring the Corona SDK, "the leading 2D app development framework", to both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Corona Labs currently supports iOS, Android, Kindle and NOOK with a single code base, allowing their 300,000 developers to more easily code for various platforms with greater speed. With Windows Phone and Windows 8 backing (aka Windows Store Apps), Microsoft and Corona hope to reach a broader audience for new apps and games. |
Huawei’s Ascend W2 Windows Phone gets a Russian review Posted: 29 Oct 2013 07:27 AM PDT Huawei is attempting to fill in the Windows Phone market where Nokia is either absent or not as strong, and although their Ascend line is not half-bad, it's not as (pardon the pun) luminous as Nokia's offerings. Still, the Ascend W1 and the recent Ascend W2 do show that the massive Chinese company can make a solid low to mid-range Windows Phone. |
Viber for Windows Phone updated to version 3.1; introduces revamped UI and more Posted: 29 Oct 2013 06:50 AM PDT Viber is a messaging app that enables you to text, group message and make free HD calls. Available cross-platform, the app has been updated on competing platforms, but now it's Windows Phone's turn. The client has been bumped to version 3.1. The release itself is quite a large one, packing a completely redesigned UI and more. Head on past the break for the details. |
Nokia Camera receives minor update to address initial quirks Posted: 29 Oct 2013 06:39 AM PDT Last week we reported on the status of Nokia Camera, the new app that combines Nokia's Pro and Smart Cam apps into one with some new UI changes and features. That update was supposed to be released on Friday but it was postponed for more in-depth testing. Today, that update is now available. Version 4.3.0.6 is live in the Store for all Lumia 92x and Lumia 1020 owners. This update is expected to fix a re-cropping issue that some users were experiencing when saving images. No other features have been reported. |
Nokia Lumia sales up a mild 19% quarter-on-quarter to 8.8 million units in Q3 Posted: 29 Oct 2013 05:59 AM PDT Nokia's Q3 results show slight but steady Lumia growthThis morning, Nokia posted their Q3 results, detailing how well their Lumia line has been doing in addition to their other services. The bad news is overall, the company was flat quarter-on-quarter, with HERE sales down 9% due to seasonal variation. Likewise, NSN was also down 7%, again attributed to "seasonality". The good news though is regards to Nokia's mobile phones, which includes Asha and Lumia. Generally, Q3 volumes were up 4% quarter-on-quarter to 55.8 million units, "demonstrating solid performance across the majority" of Nokia's range of devices. |
AwesomeLock, add a little something-something to your Windows Phone 8 lockscreen Posted: 29 Oct 2013 05:32 AM PDT If you're looking to get more out of your Windows Phone 8 lockscreen, take a look at AwesomeLock. It's a simple, straight forward lockscreen app that delivers news, weather and upcoming appointments to your lockscreen. AwesomeLock also delivers Bing daily pictures or you can tap into your Pictures Hub and use one of your own images for the lockscreen wallpaper. The app makes a nice first impression and likely is only held back by the lack of a trial version. |
