Just Weather for Windows 8, keeping it simple rain or shine Posted: 06 Nov 2013 04:42 AM PST While the weather app collection for our Windows Phone is rather crowded, Just Weather is one of the latest offerings for Windows Phone 8. The simplistic, minimalistic weather app has potential but also has some room for improvement. The intent is to deliver the basic weather information for two locations. Which is what you get but in using Just Weather, it felt like it was more of a work in progress than a finished product. |
PicFeed launches on Windows Phone, let’s you create custom feeds for Instagram Posted: 06 Nov 2013 12:03 AM PST It's been two weeks since Nokia World 2013 took place in Abu Dhabi. The event was highly successful for the Windows Phone platform. Nokia announced three new devices (two for Windows Phone 8 and one for Windows RT 8.1), new accessories for those devices, and a handful of new software. Of course Instagram for Windows Phone was finally announced on stage, but we also got other cool apps like Nokia StoryTeller, InNote, Vine, and more. PicFeed was also announced back then and is now available for download in the Windows Phone Store. Let's check it out. |

Best Buy updates their Windows Phone 8 app, improves phone upgrade checker Posted: 05 Nov 2013 07:04 PM PST Best Buy has slowly been ramping up the support for their Windows Phone app. Regular support for a big name app is something we can always get behind. Even with online retailers like Amazon and Newegg seemingly owning e-commerce, brick and mortar shops still serve a pretty vital role for many when getting new electronics. So what's new with Best Buy's app for Windows Phone? Let's find out. |
Report: Microsoft has narrowed down the list for potential CEO Posted: 05 Nov 2013 06:07 PM PST Steve Ballmer has been Microsoft's CEO since 2000. That's over 13 years ago for you mathematicians out there. Earlier this summer, he announced plans to step down as CEO sometime during the next year. Who's going to be the next CEO of Microsoft? We've heard reports of Nokia's Stephen Elop, Ford's Alan Mulally and others. Now Reuters is claiming the list has been narrowed even further. Who made the cut? Read on to find out. |
Call of Duty Windows Phone companion app now available, let the campaign begin Posted: 05 Nov 2013 05:42 PM PST With the release of the latest installment of the Call of Duty series over on the Xbox console, we are also seeing a Call of Duty companion Windows Phone app lurking in the shadows. The official Call of Duty app hopes to provide a new mobile experience designed to work hand in hand with Call of Duty Ghosts. The app does require Call of Duty registration (can be done through the app) and you have to play your first Call of Duty Ghosts multiplayer match before you can start using the app. |
Access Point updated for Lumia owners, no changelog in sight Posted: 05 Nov 2013 04:54 PM PST It's been a while since we've seen an update for Nokia's Access Point. This is an app that helps Lumia owners easily maintain the proper settings when switching between multiple SIM cards. Or if your SIM card supports multiple access points then this app, or setting actually, is a life savior. Today we picked up another little update for it. |
Win the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 2520 from Nokia before they go on sale (US only) Posted: 05 Nov 2013 02:29 PM PST It was a few weeks ago at Nokia World 2013 that we finally saw (and held) the Lumia 1520 and 2520. It's hard to not want to break into Nokia HQ and make off with the two gadgets. Both are drool-inducing in their own right. Both devices feature 1080p displays that are easily among the best we've ever seen in their respective categories. They should be launching sometime soon, but you can own both devices before they go on sale with this new contest from Nokia USA. Details after the break. |
Hashtastic for Windows Phone makes Follow Fridays on Twitter a breeze Posted: 05 Nov 2013 02:10 PM PST On Twitter more than you should be? Then you're probably familiar with and either love or hate Follow Fridays. What's that? On Fridays, Twitter users will usually share a bunch of users they think their current crop of follows should follow. You've probably seen us do it a few times with the @wpcentral account on a Friday here and there. It's popular among those social butterflies and especially anyone who manages an account on Twitter for a brand. Hashtastic is an app for Windows Phone users that makes #FF super simple. Let's check it out. |

Review - Poetic Atmosphere Case for Nokia Lumia 1020 Posted: 05 Nov 2013 01:54 PM PST When it comes to cases, everyone has their favorite. My new daily driver for the Nokia Lumia 1020 would be the Poetic Atmosphere Case, which fetches for a modest $9 on various websites (it's also available for the Lumia 928). Head past the break to see our hands on video and some high quality photos of this accessory in action. |
Turn your Windows Phone photography into extra money with PicHit.Me Posted: 05 Nov 2013 01:25 PM PST While Windows Phone is the clear third place operating system compared to Android and iOS, it's a very distant third. The latest numbers show the platform controlling about 4% of the global smartphone market share. So when a startup launches and targets Windows Phone first over other operating systems we take notice. PicHit.Me is a startup from Sweden that we're happy to see on the platform. They're also working on solving a problem that's pretty widespread. Let's check out PicHit.Me for Windows Phone 8. |
Sky Italy working on an app for Windows Phone; UK branch to follow? Posted: 05 Nov 2013 01:05 PM PST You may recall our #getskyonwindows campaign, targeting BSkyB to get the company to release solid apps for consumers to enjoy. Sky is still yet to support Windows Phone as the broadcaster does with other platforms, but it appears as though the Italian branch (Sky Italia) is working on an app for its Sky Go service. |

The game just launched today for Windows Phone 8 users and it looks to bring a few of your favorite Marvel characters into an interesting looking combat game. UK charity lists white Xbox One for auction on eBay Posted: 05 Nov 2013 12:15 PM PST It's known that Microsoft has constructed white Xbox One units for employees who worked on the next generation console, but UK charity GamesAid has listed an Xbox One on eBay - and it's in white. The auction includes the console itself (adorned with "I Made This" to the right of the disc tray), along with a special edition controller, Kinect sensor and headset. |
Get ready to take off with Microsoft and British Airway's new digital bag tag Posted: 05 Nov 2013 12:12 PM PST What is the worst part of departing on your overseas flight? Bag drop-off, of course. Dropping your bags off in one country and hoping they will be with you when you arrive elsewhere can be a real nightmare. Luckily, British Airways and Microsoft have partnered up to create a new Digital Bag Technology. You can even see it in action in the creepy demo video below. |
60 Seconds, a fast paced shoot'em up game for Windows Phone 8 Posted: 05 Nov 2013 12:01 PM PST 60 Seconds is a relatively new Windows Phone 8 game that caught our eye this morning. It's a fast paced game that has you caught up in the middle of a wild west shoot out. You are tasked with protecting valuable cargo from wave after wave of bandits trying to rob your wagon. You have sixty seconds to take out as many of the bad guys as possible. The more bandits shot, the higher the score. The game is drawn up nicely and is well suited for short game spurts or longer gaming sessions and is well worth a shot. |
ABB Group chooses Nokia Windows Phones in Finland Posted: 05 Nov 2013 11:20 AM PST ABB Finland has partnered with Nokia to deploy more than 2,200 Lumia Windows Phones to employees, and the companies are working to add even more to the roll out. If you're not familiar with the brand, it's one of the world's leading suppliers of robotic, power and automation technologies. In Finland alone, there are around 6,600 people across 30 locations. It's a large company and one that requires a solid smartphone for its workforce. |
Readit is the most stunning Reddit client for Windows Phone, period Posted: 05 Nov 2013 10:21 AM PST Editor's Choice for best Reddit clientWe're big fans of Reddit (reddit.com). It provides hours of entertainment, knowledge and general distractions for life. So far, our favorite client for Windows Phone has been the powerful Baconit, a superb demonstration of Windows Phone coding that also makes using Reddit a breeze. We also really enjoy Baconography, another fantastic offering. However, today, we have what is arguably the most striking Reddit client yet: Readit, from Message Across Studios. We're not going to pull any punches here: Readit's design is one of the top we've seen for any Windows Phone app, let alone one dedicated for Reddit. You can toss it up there with 627.am, Simple Calendar, Vieather and anything by Rudy Huyn. (Actually, we know why we like it, as it reminds us very much of Amazon's Kindle app.). Watch our video review below and see why it's so great. |

Developers: Check out the free Visual Studio 2013 launch event in London Posted: 05 Nov 2013 08:58 AM PST Before the New Developers Conference (www.ndc-london.com) kicks off in London, there's a day planned for Visual Studio 2013. December 3rd will see a free pre-conference workshop set up for developers and co. to check out. The best part? You don't need to be attending NDC to pop along. Did we mention there's going to be some folks from the VS team in the US present, along with local MS reps? |
Posted: 05 Nov 2013 08:43 AM PST While an official Snapchat client is still a ways off, developers are trying their hand once again at clone apps for Windows Phone 8We've seen unofficial Snapchat (snapchat.com) clients come and go for Windows Phone. The popular imaging service that prides itself on photos that "expire" after a short, pre-determined viewing time is one of the few holdouts for Microsoft's platform. There was talk of an official client coming to Windows Phone, but complications related to API requirements i.e. disabling screen capturing, has reportedly put the project on hold. Two popular Windows Phone developers, Den Delimarsky (Beem, Beem Sky.FM, EnTrance) and Rudy Huyn (6tag, 6sec, Wikipedia) are both racing to create the ultimate unofficial Snapchat app for Windows Phone. Presently, Delimarsky's 'Snapback' client is the most advanced in development, being at beta version 1.16, with daily updates. The app is currently in closed-beta, meaning it is invite-only and it will probably be another week or two before it is submitted to the Windows Phone store. It's not clear if the app will pass, or if it does pass, whether the Snapchat company will allow a clone app to remain available. |

The image shows the handset in white, yellow and orange. While both pricing and availability are yet to be announced (as well as the Lumia 525 itself), these are positive signs if we're to look back at the run-up to previous hardware announcements. |
Viber updated for Windows Phone; includes spell checking and new backgrounds Posted: 05 Nov 2013 07:08 AM PST Viber is a messaging app that enables you to text, group message and make free HD calls. Available cross-platform, the Windows Phone app has once again be updated. The company recently pushed out a UI revamp with a few other additions, but in version 3.1.1 we've now got spell checking. |
Nokia Lumia 525 specification sheet leaked; confirms upgrade to Lumia 520 Posted: 05 Nov 2013 06:24 AM PST The Nokia Lumia 525 is a rather mysterious Windows Phone, but more details on the Lumia 520 successor are beginning to emerge. We recently looked at the handset passing certification in china (coupled with the above renders - since removed) and now full specifications alongside a press render have been published on the Chinese website, Baidu. |
